Independence and conflicts of interest

Initial draft for formal review and approval before launch.

Draft for trustee approval

These principles need governance approval and an operational conflicts process. They describe the standard the Foundation aims to uphold.

Beneficiaries come first

Charitable objectives and beneficiary needs must guide decisions. People are free to choose a provider and are not required to buy any telecommunications product to receive educational help.

Editorial independence

Donations, sponsorships and commercial relationships must not buy favourable coverage or recommendations. Guidance should explain relevant criteria and disclose relationships that could influence a reader’s judgement.

Managing conflicts

Trustees, staff and volunteers should declare relevant interests. Decisions affected by a conflict need an appropriate record and independent handling. Beneficiary information must not be passed to commercial businesses for lead generation.

Accountability

Funding relationships and the approach to recommendations should be explained publicly where relevant. Concerns about independence can be raised through the contact and complaints routes.

A little guidance can make a big difference.
