STOP · CHECK · VERIFY
STOP: Pause before clicking, paying or sharing information. CHECK: Ask whether you expected the request and whether it pressures you to act. VERIFY: Contact the person or organisation using details you already trust, separately from the message.
Familiar stories, unexpected requests
Scams may imitate deliveries, a bank, a relative on WhatsApp or a marketplace buyer. A caller might claim to be technical support and ask to control your device. An investment or romantic contact may build trust before requesting money. Urgency and secrecy are reasons to pause.
New technology, the same pressure
QR codes can lead to false websites. A voice or video can be manipulated using AI. Unexpected loss of mobile service can have several causes, including a SIM-related account problem: contact your provider through trusted channels. Verify unusual requests separately even if they sound familiar.
If you have already responded
Stop further contact and do not send more money. Keep useful evidence such as messages and transaction details. Be cautious of anyone promising to recover lost money for an upfront fee. Read the immediate steps guide.
When you need another service
If money may have been stolen, contact your bank immediately through a trusted number or its official app. For a compromised account, contact the service provider. Report suspected crime through the appropriate police or fraud-reporting service. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services. Our educational guidance is not an emergency, financial or law-enforcement service. Report Fraud provides current fraud-reporting information.
