Wi-Fi and mobile data
Wi-Fi connects through a local network. Mobile data connects through your provider’s mobile network. An app may use either depending on your settings and connection.
Find your usage
Check your provider’s app or account for allowance and billing information. Your phone’s usage counter can help, but its date range may differ from your billing period.
Notice larger uses
Video, downloads, backups and hotspot sharing can use more data than simple messages. Set downloads or backups to use Wi-Fi if that suits your needs.
Check before travelling
Roaming arrangements vary by provider and destination. Read current terms before travel and check how to disable data roaming. Ask about spending controls and charges outside the allowance.
