Understanding app permissions

Choose what an app can access on your device.

What a permission means

Apps may ask to use your camera, microphone, contacts or location. A permission lets an app access a particular feature or information; it is worth considering why it needs it.

Match access to the task

A video-call app may need a microphone for a call. A torch app asking for contacts deserves a closer look. Deny access you do not understand and check the publisher’s official explanation.

Review existing choices

Your device’s Settings usually includes an apps or privacy section. Review permissions there. Some devices offer options such as access only while using an app or approximate location.

Check what changes

Removing a permission may stop a feature working. You can consider restoring access if you understand the reason. Delete apps you no longer need and keep remaining apps updated.
